Test panel includes: 
  •  Triglyceride (TRIG)
  •  Cholesterol, total
  •  HDL is part of the lipid panel, only - it is not available as an individual test
  •  non-HDL cholesterol - calculated as:  cholesterol, total minus HDL
  •  LDL cholesterol - calculated using the new NIH LDL-C equation (Figure 1)


Patient Instructions:
Glucose and Lipid tests
Collection Device/Tube Type:
1. EDM Base Lab: 5 mL blood - GOLD SST (gel)
2. CGY DSC: 4.5 mL blood - MINT LIHEP PST (gel)
3. NOTE: The preferred tube type at each testing site is acceptable at the alternate site
Collection Instructions:
Ordering Provider:
Clearly inform the patient and record on the requisition, the fasting/non-fasting requirement prior to this specimen collection

Laboratory Staff:
If fasting, record the number of hours fasting on the requisition and in LIS

Submission Requirements:
1 mL serum or lithium heparin plasma
Frequency of Testing:
Daily
Comments:
The LDL cholesterol calculation is not valid when: 
   •  LDL-C < 0.50 mmol/L are present or
   •  TRIG > 9.04 mmol/L or 
   •  Type III hyperlipoproteinemia is present

NOTE:  Lipid reporting is based on the Canadian Society of Clinical Chemists (CSCC) published recent recommendations in alignment with the 2021 Canadian Cardiovascular Society Guidelines (CCS) lipid guidelines
