Back to List
Test Name:
Creatinine
Ordering Information:
Test panel includes:
•  Creatinine
•  Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)

Collection Device/Tube Type:
1. EDM Base Lab: 5 mL blood - GOLD SST (gel)
2. CGY DSC: 4.5 mL blood - MINT LIHEP PST (gel)
3. NOTE: The preferred tube type at each testing site is acceptable at the alternate site
Submission Requirements:
1 mL serum or lithium heparin plasma

Frequency of Testing:
Daily
Reference Range:

Estimated glomerular filtration rate:  ≥ 18 years:  >59 mL/min/1.73 m2

Comments:
eGFR is a better indicator of kidney function than serum creatinine. In adults, the glomerular filtration rate can be estimated using the CKD-EPI equation allowing patients with earlier stages of kidney disease to be identified.

For patients ≥ 18 years of age:  an eGFR of < 60 mL/min/1.73 mor a urine albumin-creatinine ratio ≥ 3 mg/mmol for more than 3 months suggests chronic kidney disease.

For information regarding diagnosis, management and referral go to www.diagnoseckd.ca

Note:  Reduced muscle mass will lead to overestimation of eGFR and increased muscle mass will lead to underestimation of eGFR.
