Collection Device/Tube Type:
*1. Preferred: 4.5 mL blood - MINT LIHEP PST (gel)
2. Acceptable: 3.5 mL blood - GOLD SST (gel)
Submission Requirements:
2 mL lithium heparin plasma or serum
Handling/Storage Comments:
Edmonton Zone, Central Zone & North Zone:
•  spin specimen as soon as possible (within 6 hours)
•  store refrigerated until transport
•  transport at refrigerated temperatures

If a transport delay of >48 hours (>36 hours if serum) from collection to receipt at Edmonton Base Laboratory is expected, then:
•  spin and aliquot plasma or serum
•  freeze sample
•  transport frozen

Northwest Territories & Nunavut

Comments:
Edmonton Base Lab PTH results are from a 2nd Generation PTH assay. Different assay generations give potentially significantly different numerical values. Do not compare results from method to method.

Lithium heparin plasma is preferred over serum due to its longer stability.
