Clinical Prerequisite(s):
Provision of relevant, clinical information is important to ensure a clinically relevant result
Always provide/report:
•  specimen source
•  current antibiotic therapy, start date, route, and dose
•  clinical history - symptoms and start date

If the specimen is:
  • associated with prosthetic material, hardware, or implanted device then, this must be indicated on the requisition or in the ConnectCare order 
Collection Device/Tube Type:
60 mL sterile, plastic container with non-bacteriostatic saline
Specimen Requirement(s):
Collect a sample large enough to perform all tests required (i.e, 3-4 mm biopsy sample)
Collection Instructions:

Note:  Tissues submitted in dry, sterile containers are sub-optimal and will compromise the recovery of fastidious organisms

Handling and Storage:
*Room Temperature
DO NOT refrigerate
Handling/Storage Comments:
Transport to the testing laboratory (DSC Microbiology) as soon as possible after collection
Rejection Criteria:
  • Specimen submitted in non-sterile container
  • Specimen submitted in formalin

    Comments:
    Avoid swab collection if tissue samples can be obtained.  Viable, infected tissues are always superior to a swab
