Babesia blood smear (Calgary/South)

Babesia microti
Babesia species (Babesiosis)
Clinical Prerequisite(s):
ALL Babesia requests require a completed Malaria History Form or clinical history provided in the ConnectCare order

•  Trypanosoma microscopy (Calgary/South)
•  Filarial blood smear (Calgary/South)

Collection Device/Tube Type:
6 mL blood - LAVENDER (EDTA)
Comments:
Minimum volume:  2 mL whole blood
•  Immediately mix the tube 8-10 times, by gentle inversion

This test cannot be collected by a mobile collection service

Handling/Storage Comments:
•  DO NOT open the tube
•  DO NOT centrifuge
•  DO NOT make blood smears

Rejection Criteria:
Clotted specimens are unacceptable, as they cannot be processed
