Always provide/record:
•  specimen source:  Prostatic Massage
•  current/proposed antibiotic therapy; start date
•  relevant, clinical history - symptoms & signs; risk factors
•  any antimicrobial allergies

To accurately diagnose chronic bacterial prostatitis, the bacterial counts should be at least ten times greater in the prostatic specimens (EPS and VB3) than in the urethral and bladder specimens (VB2).  However, many patients who have chronic, bacterial prostatitis, harbour only small number of bacteria in the prostate.  In these patients, direct culture of the EPS is particularly useful

Urine must be collected before starting antibiotics


Collection Device/Tube Type:
60 mL sterile, plastic container
Comments:

Specimen Requirement(s):
  • Patient should reframe from voiding for 4-6 hours, or overnight, prior to the test
  • No ejaculation in 5-7 days preceding the test
  • No antibiotics 2-4 wees preceding the test

    The specimen must be refrigerated immediately following collection

    Transport Temperature:
    Transport on an ice pack to the testing laboratory as soon as possible to prevent inaccurate culture results
    •  Ensure the container does not leak and is not cross-threaded

  • Mislabelled or unlabelled specimen or requisition
  • Leaking container
