ensure a clinically relevant result Always provide/record: • specimen source: Prostatic Massage • current/proposed antibiotic therapy; start date • relevant, clinical history - symptoms & signs; risk factors • any antimicrobial allergies
To accurately diagnose chronic bacterial prostatitis, the bacterial counts should be at least ten times greater in the prostatic specimens (EPS and VB3) than in the urethral and bladder specimens (VB2). However, many patients who have chronic, bacterial prostatitis, harbour only small number of bacteria in the prostate. In these patients, direct culture of the EPS is particularly useful

Patient should reframe from voiding for 4-6 hours, or overnight, prior to the test
No ejaculation in 5-7 days preceding the test
No antibiotics 2-4 wees preceding the test
