Clinical Prerequisite(s):
Swabs are routinely processed for gram stain/microscopic examination, only

Specimens are cultured for yeast identification and susceptibility, if a history of treatment failure (azone-refractory candidiasis) is indicated on the requisition/order

Provision of relevant, clinical information is important to ensure a clinically relevant result
Always provide/record:
•  specimen source
•  current antibiotic and/or fungal therapy and start date
•  clinical history
Indicate:
•  if resistant Candida/yeast is suspected because of azole (eg. fluconazole) treatment failure
•  if acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (Vincent's angina) is suspected clinically

Collection Device/Tube Type:
E-swab collection device
Swab in clear transport media
Specimen Requirement(s):
Oral collection
  1. Require that the patient rinse their mouth with sterile saline
  2. Wipe gingival lesion with dry, sterile gauze
  3. Swab or scrape areas of exudation or ulceration
  4. Carefully place the swab in the collection device, without contaminating it
Handling and Storage:
Refrigerate
Rejection Criteria:
•  Mislabelled or unlabelled specimen or requisition
•  No swab in the collection device
