Collection Device/Tube Type:
30 mL sterile container
60 mL sterile, plastic container
APTIMA Multitest swab specimen collection kit
APTIMA Unisex Swab Specimen Collection Kit
Comments:

Preferred - female:  vaginal or cervical swab
Preferred - male:  urine
Only one specimen is required to perform molecular testing for Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Trichomonas vaginalis.  Refer to Trichomonas vaginalis screen (Calgary/South)

Collection Instructions:
*To prevent cross-contamination it is extremely important to:
   
1.  Always use new gloves for each new patient
   2.  Never puncture or touch the foil lid when collecting swabs or transferring urine specimens
   3.  Ensure the inside of the cap does not touch non-sterile surfaces (work surface,
        hands, etc.) when collecting swabs or transferring urine specimens
   4.  Package/bag specimens from different patients separately


Patient Instructions:

Males:  Chlamydia trachomatis/Neisseria gonorrhoeae/Trichomonas vaginalis for Males
Females: Chlamydia trachomatis/Neisseria gonorrhoeae/Trichomonas vaginalis for females
If patient requires both midstream urinalysis and initial stream collection for CT/GC/TV:  
•  First Catch and Midstream Urine collection - Combined


Handling/Storage Comments:
*To prevent cross-contamination it is extremely important to package/bag specimens from different patients separately*
•  Always use new gloves
for each new patient
  When transferring urine specimens, never puncture or touch the foil lid.  When removing the cap, ensure the inside of the cap does not touch non-sterile surfaces (work surface, hands, etc.)

Transport Temperature:
Swab in APTIMA transport media is stable for 60 days at 2º - 30ºC
Urine in APTIMA transport tube is stable for 30 days at 2º - 30ºC
Urine in the primary, sterile collection container must be:
  •  
transported to the lab within 24 hours of collection
  •  transferred to the APTIMA Urine Transport Tube for Male & Female urine
     specimens within that time
