Clinical Prerequisite(s):
  • Vaginal swabs are processed by microscopic examination for diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis and/or vaginal candidiasis
  • Specimens are cultured for yeast identification and susceptibility if a history of treatment failure (azole-refractory candidiasis) is indication of the requisition/order
  • For bacterial culture, refer to Genital culture, bacterial (Calgary/South) for test information and indications

Collection Device/Tube Type:

Swab in clear transport media
Comments:
Alternate:  Air-dried, unfixed slide
Collection Instructions:
  1. Use a speculum without lubricant
  2. Collect secretions from the mucosa, high in the vaginal canal
  3. Carefully place the swab
Handling and Storage:
Room temperature
Rejection Criteria:
  • Mislabelled or unlabelled specimen or requisition
  • No swab in the collection device
