Provision of relevant, clinical information is important to ensure a clinically relevant result. Always provide/record: • clinical history • travel history • antimicrobial treatment history • Is the patient immunocompromised? - steroid and other immuno-suppressive therapy - post-transplant - hematological or other malignancy - history of chronic infarctions

Specimen Requirement(s):
Submit all 3 collection containers: Bone marrow culture includes aerobic, anaerobic, and fungal cultures
Collection Instructions:
Check the bottom the vial - if it is yellow, DO NOT USE (the bottle may be contaminated)
Check the expiry date (y/m/d) found on the container label. If expired, DO NOT USE
Disinfect the bottle tops with 70% isopropanol and allow to dry for 1 minute
DO NOT USE IODINE
Health care provider disinfects the bone marrow aspiration site as per AHS Guidelines
After collection, gently mix the bottles by inversion, to prevent clotting
Ensure both bottles are labelled with all required patient identifiers
DO NOT COVER the 2D or other bottle barcodes with the patient-identifier labels
Handling and Storage:
*Store at Room Temperature DO NOT refrigerate

Immediately transport the specimen to the testing laboratory
Turnaround time for: Negative Bacterial culture: 5 days Negative fungal culture: up to 6 weeks
