CALGARY/SOUTH ZONES
Test Name:
Urine cytology - voided or catheterized / barbotage
Ordering Information:
Urine for Cytopathology Patient Instructions
Collection Device / Container Type:
Sterile capped container
Submission Requirements:
•  Submit fresh urine (no fixative)
•  Containers must be securely tightened to avoid leakage
•  Place collected specimen in a sealed biohazard bag. Place requisition in outside piuch

Note:
•  Indicate if specimen was obtained through catheterization or following instrumentation or if the patient has an in dwelling catheter.
•  If Microbiology testing is required, the specimen must be sent there first
•  If tests other than Cytopathology are required, a requisition must be completed and accompany the specimen

Stability and Storage:
•  Room temperature up to 1 hour
•  Refrigerate after 1 hour

Comments:
•  Early morning voided specimens are not suitable for cytology because the cells are usually too degenerate for examination

•  The chances of finding diagnostic cells increases with the volume of the submitted specimen

•  Catheterized bladder urine is not recommended for cytology. Catheters (and instruments) irritate and denude epithelial cells complicating cytologic examination. A waiting period of 1-2 weeks following removal of a catheter before collecting a voided specimen is recommended. Indicate on the requisition the date of the removal of the catheter.

•  Urine that has been sitting in the drainage bag for a long period of time is unsuitable for cytologic examination
