Test Name:
Fine needle aspirate cytology
Synonyms:
FNA cytology
Collection Device / Container Type:
Slides:  immediate spray fixation or 95% ethanol
Needle rinse:  sterile 0.9% saline (5 - 10 mL)
Core biopsy:  formalin or sterile 0.9% saline (5 - 10 mL)

Note:  Collection of fine needle aspirate cytology specimens is not performed at DynaLIFE

CALGARY/SOUTH ZONE
Test Name:
Fine needle aspirate cytology
Collection Device / Container Type:
CytoLyt® container
Comments:
•  Expel the contents of the syringe into a CytoLyt® container and rinse the needle in the same container.
•  Note: For optimal sampling, use a 20-22 gauge needle and aspirate the lesion using multiple passes
•  Containers must be securely tightened to avoid leakage
•  Place collected specimen in a sealed biohazard bag. Place requisition in outside pouch.

This procedure may yield as aspirate and a needle biopsy. Place the needle biopsy in a small formalin container. Send both samples to Cytopathology. If only a needle biopsy is collected, send the formalin container to Anatomic Pathology with Anatomical Pathology Requisition (Consultation Request)
