Note:  Contact the Microbiologist-on-call prior to submitting requests from respiratory sources other than BAL

Provision of relevant clinical information is important to ensure a clinically relevant result
Always provide/record:

  • clinical history - symptoms, signs and duration
  • Is there any underlying respiratory disease? (eg., bronchiectasis; cystic fibrosis, COPD, asthma, malignancy
  • Is the patient immunocompromised? (eg., chronic infection; steroid & other immuno-suppressive therapy; post-transplant; hematological or other malignancy)

Collection Device/Tube Type:
BACTEC Pediatric blood culture vial
Comments:
Minimum volume required:  0.5 mL

Collection Instructions:
•  Before collection, prepare the site as if for surgical incision
•  Aseptically inoculate material into a pediatric blood culture vial

NOTE:  SPS should only be used for fungal and/or AFB bone marrow cultures, as other bacterial organisms may be inhibited by the anticoagulant

Handling and Storage:
*Store at Room Temperature
DO NOT refrigerate
Handling/Storage Comments:
Critical specimen:  Transport the specimen immediately, at room temperature,  to the testing laboratory
