- Is there any underlying respiratory disease? (eg., bronchiectasis; cystic fibrosis, COPD, asthma, malignancy
- Is the patient immunocompromised? (eg., chronic infection; steroid & other immuno-suppressive therapy; post-transplant; hematological or other malignancy)

• Before collection, prepare the site as if for surgical incision
• Aseptically inoculate material into a pediatric blood culture vial
NOTE: SPS should only be used for fungal and/or AFB bone marrow cultures, as other bacterial organisms may be inhibited by the anticoagulant
