Clinical Prerequisite(s):
Provision of relevant, clinical information is important to ensure a clinically relevant result
Always provide/record:

•  clinical history - symptoms, signs, and their duration
•  reason for removal of prosthetic joint/testing
•  duration of time the prosthesis has been in-situ

Collection Device/Tube Type:
Sterile plastic container with secure lid
Collection Instructions:
  1. Remove orthopedic hardware aseptically, in the operating room
  2. Place the extracted hardware in the sterile, plastic, container
    • Avoid further contamination with any other surfaces or materials
  3. If the hardware is too large to fit in the container, dissassemble into smaller parts before placing in the container
    • Avoid contamination.  Failure to do so, may result in specimen rejection


Handling and Storage:
DO NOT refrigerate
Store at room temperature
Handling/Storage Comments:
Submit to laboratory as soon as possible
Rejection Criteria:
Swab of explanted hardware is not suitable for culture
