All sites referring to Edmonton Base Lab:
• Refrigerate upon receipt at the collection site
• Transport at refrigerated temperatures
• EDM Base Lab: Store refrigerated until analysis

Sites referring to Calgary DSC:
• Calgary and area PSCs: Transport in ambient temperatures
• South Zone PSCs and APL rural sites: Transport at refrigerated temperatures
• CGY DSC: Store refrigerated until analysis

No reference range, interpretation is reported.

Comments:

• Protein electrophoresis, urine, 24 hour is the preferred test and will include the quantitation of the intact monoclonal protein and/or free light chain, if present

• If indicated, immunofixation analysis is performed upon approval by a Clinical Chemist or General Pathologist
• For discussion of rare cases where immunofixation is not performed based on analysis of the UPE pattern, but may be indicated based on clinical grounds, please contact the Clinical Chemist Team:
