Aspirate fluid
CAPD effluent
Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis
Fluid - peritoneal dialysate
Clinical Prerequisite(s):
Provision of relevant, clinical information is important to ensure a clinically relevant result
Always provide/record:
•  specimen source
•  current antibiotic therapy and start date
•  clinical history - symptoms, signs, and their duration
•  If "yeast" or "Filamentous fungus/mold" culture is required this must be recorded on
    the requisition to ensure proper processing

Note:
 - Collect prior to antimicrobial therapy for greatest diagnostic sensitivity
 - Do not submit swab of effluent
 - Do not submit specimen in containers with any of the following microbial inhibitory substances: 
       • Heparin
       • EDTA
       • Citrate

Collection Instructions:
1.  Submit peritoneal in an effluent bag.  Ensure the bag does not leak
2.  Place the dialysis bag inside a larger bag and then, into a leak-proof container
3.  Transport to the testing laboratory as soon as possible after collection

  • Mislabelled or unlabelled specimen/requisition
  • Leaking specimen
