Provision of relevant clinical information is important to ensure a clinically relevant result

If sexual abuse suspected, refer to Alberta Child and Youth Services for proper medico-legal documentation and procedures

  • State specimen source - Specify Neisseria gonorrhoeae on requisition
  • Note:
     - The preferred specimen to detect N. gonorrhoeae and C. trachomatis is a morning first-catch urine for GenProbe APTIMA (NAAT)

    Collection Device/Tube Type:
    Swab in charcoal transport media
    Collection Instructions:

      •  Submit a vaginal swab
      •  A cervical swab is not required for pre-pubescent females

    1. Collect the specimen as per established pediatric guidelines
    2. Carefully place the swab into the collection device without contaminating it

    Handling and Storage:
