Provision of relevant clinical information is important to ensure a clinically relevant result

  • State specimen source
  • Provide clinical history
  • Relevant clinical information:
    • intra/post partum
    • post surgical (e.g. D&C, episiotomy, LEEP, post-hysterectomy, vaginal repair)
    • threatened abortion
    • cuff cellulitis
    • genital cancer
    • local radiotherapy
    • PROM
    • pessary in place
    • Beta-hemolytic streptococcus/Staphylococcus aureus infection
    • sexual assault
    • toxic shock syndrome
  • Note:
     - Routine vaginal culture is performed on children
     - Vaginal swabs from adults are cultured ONLY when relevant clinical diagnosis and/or specific relevant infectious agent/disease is provided AND is approved after consultation with the Microbiologist
     - Direct smear will be made in the laboratory from swab submitted

    Collection Instructions:

    1.

    Use a speculum without lubricant

    2.

    Collect secretions from the mucosa high in the vaginal canal (adults) or as per pediatric collection guidelines

    3.

    Carefully place swab back into the collection device without contaminating it
