·      Specify specimen source

·      Provide indication for testing

·      Provide information from previous VRE results

Preferred Collection Device/Tube Type:
Sterile 60 mL plastic container (orange-top).
Collection Instructions:

1.   

Pass urine into toilet prior to collection the stool specimen

2.   

Collect the specimen in a wide-mouth container. 
NOTE: The stool specimen must not come in contact with urine or water
                                                                                         

3.   

Alternatively:

·      Place a large piece of plastic food wrap under the toilet seat and over the toilet opening

·      Pass stool onto the plastic-wrap

·      Transfer the specimen to the sterile 60 mL container

4.   

Fill ½ to ¾ of entire 60 mL container.  Do not overfill

Submit to laboratory as soon as possible.

Rejection Criteria:
  • Mislabelled or unlabelled specimen/requisition
  • No specimen in collection device
  • Leaking specimen
  • More than 1 screen per week

    Positive VRE results are reported to public health, the ordering physician, and infection control if applicable
