Clinical Prerequisite(s):
Provision of relevant clinical information is important to ensure a clinically relevant result

  • State specimen source - Name of joint
  • Include "Prosthetic joint infection" on requisition
  • State current antibiotic therapy and start date
  • State special culture requests (e.g. mycobacterial, fungal) if indicated
  • Prior antibiotic exposure (within last 2 weeks)
  • Note:
     - Use checklist for Intra-operative specimen collection for diagnosis of prosthetic joint infections
     - Antibiotic prophylaxis should ideally be withheld until AFTER specimen collection

    Requisition/Forms:

    Each container must have its own requisition

    Collection Device/Tube Type:
    Sterile 60 mL plastic container (orange-top).
    Comments:
  • 5 - 6 containers
  • One container per tissue
  • Preservative-free saline
  • Collection Instructions:

    1.

    Sharp dissection is recommended for excision rather than cautery

    2.

    Collect 5 to 6 tissues, 3-4 mm in size. DO NOT send swabs

    3.

    Each tissue to be collected from different suspected area – ideally from the intersurface

    4.

    Use different instruments for each tissue to avoid cross contamination

    5.

    Place each piece of tissue in its own separate container. Cover with preservative-free saline. Tissue submitted in a dry sterile container are suboptimal and will compromise the recovery of fastidious organisms

    6.

    Each tissue require a separate requisition

    Room temperature

  • Submit to Laboratory as soon as possible (<2 hours ideally)
  • Ensure container does not leak and lid is not cross threaded
  • Rejection Criteria:
  • Specimen submitted in unsterile container
  • Specimen submitted in formalin
