Superficial wound culture, genital (Edmonton/Central/North)

Clinical Prerequisite(s):
Provision of relevant clinical information is important to ensure a clinically relevant result

  • State specimen source
  • Provide clinical history.  State symptoms and signs, and their duration
  • State current antibiotic therapy and start date
  • Provide travel history
  • Collection Instructions:

    Surface skin, rashes, lesions

    1.    Clean the surface with sterile saline

    2.    Gently roll swab over the surface of the area, approximately 5 times, focusing on the area of pus or inflamed tissue

    3.    Carefully replace the swab in the collection device without contaminating it

                                                                                               .

    Ulcers, vesicles, pustules

    1.    Clean the surface with sterile saline

    2.    Collect as follows:

    Ulcers:

    Vigorously rub the base, using the Dacron swab

    Vesicles/pustules:

    Unroof prior to collecting.  Vigorously rub the base, using the Dacron swab

     

    3.    Carefully replace the swab in the collection device without contaminating it
