Body fluid culture, prosthetic joint (Edmonton/Central/North)

Fluid - prosthetic joint
Fluid aspirate - prosthetic joint
Clinical Prerequisite(s):
Provision of relevant clinical information is important to ensure a clinically relevant result
Always provide/record:
• 
specimen source - name of joint
•  Prosthetic joint infection on requisition
•  current and/or prior antibiotic therapy (within last 2 weeks) and start date
•  clinical history: symptoms and signs; duration.
      - include history of trauma, previous surgery, recent infection
•  special culture requests (eg. mycobacterial, fungal) if indicated

Note:
 - DO NOT SEND swabs of fluid
 - DO NOT SEND fluid in syringe (with or without needle)
 - DO NOT SEND leaking container

Comments:

Collection Instructions:
1.  Clean the needle puncture site with alcohol.
2.  Disinfect using chlorhexidine (preferred) or povidone-iodine/alcohol solution
3.  
Using aseptic technique, aspirate joint fluid
4.  
Disinfect septa of collection devices. Inject fluid into the devices in the following order:
       •  anaerobic transport medium
       •  EDTA tube
       •  BACTEC Pediatric vial       
5.  DO NOT overfill
6.  DO NOT obscure BACTEC vial barcode or sequence numbers

  • Submit to laboratory immediately after collection
  • Ensure container does not leak and lid is not cross threaded
