Provision of relevant, clinical information is important to ensure a clinically relevant result
Always provide/record
•  specimen source - specify:
   - Corneal scrapings
   - OS or OD
• 
current antibiotic therapy and start date
•  clinical history - symptoms, signs, and their duration
•  If filamentous fungi/mold culture is required it must be recorded on the requisition

Note:  Obtain specimen for culture before topical agents are applied

Organisms are more readily detected in scrapings than from a swab

Collection Instructions:
•  Scrapings must be taken by an ophthalmologist or trained physician
•  Collect scrapings aseptically

Ocular specimens must be transported to the laboratory immediately for processing within 2 hours.
Rejection Criteria:
  • Mislabelled or unlabeled specimen/requisition
  • No swab in collection device
  • Non-sterile container
