Bilary tube (T-tube) drainage fluid
Fluid - Penrose drainage
Fluid - Sinus drainage
Fluid - sump drainage
Fluid, drainage - chest tube
Fluid, drainage - fistula
Fluid, drainage - G-tube
Fluid, drainage - Jackson-Pratt (JP)
Clinical Prerequisite(s):
Provision of relevant, clinical information is important to ensure a clinically relevant result
Always provide/record:
•  specimen source
•  current antibiotic therapy and start date
•  clinical history including symptoms, signs, and duration
•  Indicate clearly, if yeast culture is required

Collection Device/Tube Type:
10 mL sterile tube
60 mL sterile, plastic specimen container
Anaerobic transport system (eg. Port-A-Cul or equivilant)
Comments:
Preferred specimen:  Fluid
•  The submission of a swab for culture is suboptimal

•  Tubes and tips are NOT suitable for culture

Collection Instructions:

1.   

Obtain a fresh sample of the drainage fluid aseptically

2.   

Place into a sterile tube or container.  Use an anaerobic transport system when anaerobic culture is required

3.   

Do not overfill

Note:  Swabs should be submitted ONLY when an extremely low volume of fluid can be obtained.

DO NOT refrigerate
Handling/Storage Comments:
  • Transport to the testing laboratory as soon as possible after collection
  • Ensure container does not leak and lid is not cross-threaded

    Mislabelled or unlabeled specimen/requisition

    Most drainage fluids are cultured aerobically only
